RSS Feed WK 3 - Test Scores

I found this article interesting because in previous years, I really didn’t pay attention to the national average scores. The article points out the nations overall math and English scores increased, when compared to previous years. I was shocked to see that the average score was only “242 on a scale of 500” in math. I would have figured our students were scoring higher than that. This article tries to play a positive spin on a 1-point gain in a two-year period, however I still see this as a negative aspect. Why only a 1-point gain in two years? I understand it takes some time to show positive growth and with changes to curriculum, teachers and expectations maybe this is normal, however is this ‘media’ trick supposed to come across as positive as it really is not?

Overall, I feel this article is giving false information about the success of our education system, if these schools (districts, states) or only seeing a 1-point increase they need to re-evaluate the effectiveness of the past two years and possibly try something that other areas are doing – who are seeing higher results.
